Biography
Thomas Tinley, son of Walter and Martha Tinley, formerly Brentnall, was [born on the 22nd July 1794], in Heanor, Derbyshire and at the age of 26 married Betsey Slack on the [11th January 1820]. In 1841, Thomas was a Lace Maker by trade. Betsey’s birthplace is not known, her age at the time of the 1841 census was rounded down and notated as 40; this puts her year of birth between 1801 and 1804.At the time of the 1841 England census, Thomas and Betsey were living in the Parish of Radford, Nottinghamshire. Living with them at that time were their daughters, Martha, whose age is rounded down and notated as 15; Harriett, who was 7 years of age at this time and son Thomas, who was 1 year old.
Thomas and Betsy are thought to have had nine children.
Thomas, at the age of 50 years and after the death of his first wife, married Mary Musson on the 15th April 1844, at the Baptist Chapel, parish of Southwell, a small town approximately 14.5 miles NE of Nottingham. Thomas was a Lace Maker by trade and at the time of the 1851 England Census was residing at 24 Mt [East] Street, in Radford, Nottingham. Mary Musson a Spinster was residing at Southwell. John Phillips, the Minister, conducted the ceremony. Thomas’s father Walter, a Joiner died prior to Thomas's wedding, but he is not notated as deceased on the marriage certificate. Mary’s father Henry Musson, a Framework Knitter is not notated as deceased. Witnesses were Thomas Jones and Sarah Musson, the latter highly likely to be Mary’s sister. William Jones was the Registrar. Mary Musson’s age at the time of the 1851 England Census was notated as 44 years, therefore she was born about 1807. Her place of birth was Southwell in Nottinghamshire. .Thomas and Mary are thought to have had two children:
