John Tinley (1811 - 1866)

Biography

John Tinley, son of Walter and Katherine Tinley, formerly Keen, was baptised on the 30th June 1811, at Ilkeston, Derbyshire and married Mary Ann Newton about 1837. In 1837, at the time of his son Walter's baptism, John was a Plumber by trade. At around the year 1841 John moved 54 miles SW of his birth place and started to trade as a Painter and Glazier in Birmingham.

Birmingham was a fast developing town. In its early days as a manor Birmingham had no trading laws restricting merchants and craftsmen, so they were able to sell their goods freely. People from the surrounding area were attracted by this lack of restrictions and increasingly set themselves up as traders in Birmingham .

John was one of these traders and went to Birmingham to set up business as a Plumber & Glazier with his brother Charles. Leaving his wife at Little Hallam, to look after his first and second born son Walter, who was four years of age and Richard who was two John, at the time of the 1841 English census, was residing at No 7, Melbourne Place, Great Russel Street. At this time they were employing an apprentice.

At the time of the 1851 England census, the family were all residing at 146 Islington, Birmingham. At this time John had widened his skills and was trading as a Baker as well as a Painter, a somewhat odd combination of trades. John was employing three men, one of whom was his son Walter, as a Baker.

At the time of the 1861 census John and Mary Ann were residing at 21 Islington, Birmingham together with their children Walter, aged 24; Richard, aged 21; John, aged 19; Mary Ann, aged 14; Charles, aged 10 and Newton, aged 6. Also living with the family was John's mother Katherine, Walter's widow, who was the good age of 87 years.

Their son William, aged 16, a Silversmith by trade was residing at 146 Islington, with his cousin Jane Newton, a Baker by trade.

John died on the 14th August 1866. The cause of John's death was an abscess in the left kidney. Richard Tinley, his son, who at that time was residing at 343 Icknield Port Road, Birmingham, was present when his father died and registered the death on the 17th of August, 1866, in the sub district of Ladywood, Birmingham. John was a Painter and Master Plumber by trade and seemed to be doing quite well, employing four men and two boys in 1861.

Mary Ann was born about 1813, at Cossal, Nottinghamshire a small town only two miles East of Ilkeston. It is fair to assume therefore that they moved to Birmingham after their marriage, about 1837 and after their son Richard was born about 1839.

John must have done reasonably well for himself and his family, sufficiently enough that his wife Mary Ann was able to live on an Annuity after his death. At the time of the 1881 census, the widowed Mary Ann was 68 years of age and residing with her son Newton at 308 Vincent Street, Birmingham. At the time of the 1891 England census she had moved with the family to 201 Ladywood Road.

Mary Ann died at the age of 84, on the 29th January 1898, at 201 Ladywood, Edgbaston. Her grandson, Harold Newton was present when she died from Influenza and Bronchitis, certified by C H J Hogg. The Registrar was Ann Baker.

John and Mary Ann had nine children:
