Charles Tinley (1815 - 1866)

Biography

Charles Tinley, son of Walter and Katherine Tinley, formerly Keen was baptized on the 19th March, 1815, [at Saint Lawrence Church], in the Parish of Heanor, Derbyshire. For a short period, at the age of 26, Charles was living and working with his brother John in Birmingham as a Painter & Glazier. At the age of 27 years, Charles was employed as a Framework Knitter and residing in Alfreton, Derbyshire. He married Maria Elliott, who was 23 years of age, on the 20th November 1842, at the Register Office in the District of Belper, Derbyshire. Maria was residing at Oakerthorpe, South Wingfield. Witnesses at the marriage were Samuel Brooks and Eliza Pym, and Jesse Redford registrar, conducted the proceedings with Joseph Pym, Supt registrar in attendance. Charles died at the age of 51 years, on the 26th February 1866, at Wingfield Road, Clay Cross from Apoplexy. The death was registered by his son Charles who was present on the 28th February, 1866, in the sub district of Ashover, registration district Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Charles was buried on the 1st March, 1866, at the Anglican Church, St Bartholomew, Clay Cross, Derbyshire. Charles was a Painter by trade at the time of his son Charles birth, a Painter and Glazier when Mary was born.

Maria Elliott was born illegitimate in 1819, in Swanwick, Derbyshire and died at the age of 47 years on the 20th June 1866, at Wingfield Road, Clay Cross. Maria died from Ulceration of the bowels and Exhaustion. Maria’s daughter Catherine, who was in attendance, registered the death on 27th June, 1866, in the sub district of Ashover, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Maria was buried on the 22nd June 1866 at the Anglican Church, St Bartholomew, Clay Cross, Derbyshire. At the time of the 1851 England census the family was living at Hallfield Gate, Shirland. Also living with them at this time was the young lad Alexander Elliott, aged 13, i.e. born abt 1838, in Swanwick, the same birthplace as Maria. Alexander's relationship to the Head of family is notated as "Son in Law". It is reasonable to assume that this relationship is incorrect if one uses the current day terminology of Son in Law. Therefore this begs the question as to whether Maria had a son, out of wedlock, four years prior to marrying Charles. Alexander was employed as a Miner at that time.

At the time of the 1861 census, the family were living in Wingfield Lane, Claylane, Clay Cross. At this time Charles was aged 46, employed as a Painter and Glazier, Maria was 42. Also living at the family home were son Charles, aged 18, daughters Catherine aged 15 and Mary aged 12, sons Walter aged 10 and William aged 7 and daughter Annie aged 3 years.

It would appear that there are seven children of this marriage:

An Elizabeth Tinley, aged 8 years was living with son Charles and his wife Sarah and family at the time of the 1871 census.
