Walter Tinley b 1768 is the earliest ancestor found in our genealogy search

Walter Tinley b 1768, who lived in Heanor, Derbyshire, is the earliest ancestor that we can link to with a degree of certainty at this time. However there is fairly genealogy lead suggesting that we are related to the famous cricketer Robert Crispin Tinley. Robert Crispin played cricket for Nottingham and was well renowned.

Our Tinley link relies on the accuracy of comments made between William Tinley 1853 - 1929, and his daughter Annie Elizabeth Tinley b 1888. Annie Elizabeth wrote a letter to Mrs. Ruth Tinley, a family historian, in 1951, in response to a request for family information. In that letter she mentions that her father William had a 2nd cousin, R. C. Tinley who was a well known cricketer, who she thought played for Nottingham. Records show that there was a Robert Crispin Tinley who played for Nottinghamshire and indeed England. He was born on October 25th, 1830, Southwell, Nottinghamshire and died December 11th, 1900, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire aged 70 years, 47 days.

According to J A Woodfield, who did her own research into the Tinley family, Ruth Tinley  was doubtful regarding this link between our branch and the so called Nottingham Tinley's. The comments from William to his daughter Annie Elizabeth may indeed have been wishful thinking, however, our own Walter's sons from his first marriage to Martha Brentnall, lived and worked in Nottingham within yards of the Nottingham families. Further doubts creep into Williams comments relating to an Uncle John in that he was in the army and went to India. Well William's father did indeed have a brother John but he spent his working life in business in Birmingham.

The Ruth referred to in Annie's letter would have been Ruth Ellen Tinley born 1882 in Kings Norton. Ruth Ellen's father Walter Tinley 1837 - 1908 would have been William's 1st cousin.

If we assume the link to be correct we are able to benefit from the family tree research of those more closely related to Robert Crispin Tinley. If R C Crispin was William's 2nd cousin, their common grandparents, Walters parents were Gervase Tinley 1725 - 1804 and Ann Lalock.

My personal favourite for Walter’s father is Thomas Tinley, who lived in Duffield, Derbyshire and married Martha Taylor.
