Walter Tinley was born sometime around 1768. George III was King of England and this year saw a change of Prime Minister from the Earl of Chatham, Pitt ’The Elder’ to the Duke of Grafton. Walter would have been about one year old in 1769, at the start of the Industrial Revolution. Richard Arkwright was designing and building a machine that would automate the spinning of cotton. James Watt at the same time was perfecting the steam engine. Whilst we know that Walter was living in the parish of Heanor at the time of his first marriage and that he lived in that parish until at least 1815, we have no records as to where he was born.

Walter was married twice.

His first marriage was to Martha Brentnall on the 16th December 1793, in the Parish Church, Heanor, when he was about 25 years of age, and Martha was about 21. Both Walter and Martha were resident in the Parish of Heanor. John Thompson, the Vicar, performed the marriage. Witnesses to the marriage were George Brentnall and John Hawksley.

Martha Brentnall was born sometime around  1772,  in Heanor, and died young at the age of 35 on the 18th June, 1805, in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, approximately 3 miles SE of her birthplace. Walter and Martha had two sons from this marriage, the first, Thomas was born 22nd July 1794, when Walter was about 26 years old. George, his second son, was born 30th December 1797, when Walter was about 29 years old.

Walter Tinley married his second wife, Katherine Keen, one year and a few days after the death of his first wife, Martha, on  the 23rd June 1806, in Heanor, Derbyshire, when he was about 38 years of age. They were married by John Thompson the vicar. Katherine was born abt. 1774 at Kingham in Oxfordshire.

In March 1815, Walter was a joiner by trade. Walter died sometime before his 75th birthday  i.e. before the 20th November, 1842, as he had died prior to his second marriage son Charles’ marriage in that year. Walter left little to his wife Katherine, as at the time of the 1851 England census at the age of 77 she  was living as a pauper at Shipley Common. Ten years later, at the time of the 1861 England census, Katherine was living with her son John and his family at 21 Islington, Birmingham. Katherine died on the 11th February 1863, at the age of 89 years at Wingfield Road, Clay Cross, and was buried at the Anglican Church, St Bartholomew, Clay Cross, Derbyshire, on February 15th 1863. The cause of death is certified as 'Old age'. Her son Charles, who was present, registered her death on 14th February 1863. From this marriage we can follow our direct line ancestry. Records show that Katherine was sometimes spelt with a ‘C’, however her signature on their marriage record is ‘K’. One has to assume that she was likely to know the spelling of her own name. Also her name is spelt with a ‘K’ on the 1861 census record. Any doubt that this is a different Walter from the one that married Martha Brentnall, is dispelled if one examines the similarity of Walter’s signature on the two marriage records. Walter and Katherine had four children.
